Most fungi are harmless until they penetrate the skin through minor cuts, injury, or irritation causing the nail to thicken, become yellow or brownish, and develop a foul-smelling odor. Treatment is best begun in the early stages of infection. Oral and topical medications may be prescribed. Medication may or may not completely eliminate the fungus.
