Reconstructive Ankle Surgery:
Reconstructive ankle surgery may be recommended for patients looking to relieve pain and/or discomfort caused by injuries such as sprains and fractures, improper footwear, flat feet, arthritis, congenital abnormalities, or degenerative changes throughout one’s adult life that was not able to be resolved by other less-invasive treatment. Depending on the situation, reconstructive surgery can involve grafting or fusing bones, implanting joints, and may including pins, screws, or staples to repair and stabilize the ankle.
Ankle Fusion:
Ankle fusions or ankle arthrodesis is done to relieve pain and improve function for a patient suffering from arthritis in the ankle. The surgery involves removing the cartilage from a joint and then fusing bones together so they do not move. Fusions can be done with metal plates, screws, or pins.
Tendon Surgery:
Tendons are a soft, band-like tissue that connects your muscles to your bones. In the ankle, the personals are two muscles with tendons that lie along the outside of the fibula and cross behind the outer ankle bone. Problems with the peroneal tendons are very common in athletes. Tendon surgery is typically needed for acute injuries such as tendon ruptures, but can also be necessary for shortening or lengthening the tendon. There are also instances where the tendon may need to be re-routed to improve ankle function.
Ultimately, your podiatric physician will determine whether surgical intervention is necessary and should discuss with you all options available for the most successful outcome.
